Boroondara Netball Centre Pavilion
Upgrade of change and support facilities for Netball Centre at McLeay Park to accommodate up to 3,000 participants. Existing facility required participants and spectators to use older style public toilets and provided inadequate firstaid and administrative facilities. The new facility provides
- Amenities and change facilities for participants and umpires
- Support and administration to accommodate the number of participants
- First Aid facilities
- Social Room and multipurpose space to provide training facilities for state level team that trains from site
Project objectives
To provide adequate facilities to meet needs to women and girls participating in sport.
Project Outcomes
Provision of state of the art facilities that provide adequate support for the eight courts and 16 teams that are competing at any one time on competition days.
Provision of facilities to support women’s sport.
Innovative features of the project
Consultative design process that ensured final design and facility met the needs of the user groups.
Existing mature river red eucalypts and other significant planting on site in close proximity to the building were retained by carefully sitting the building extension.
Building design and orientation was planned also to not impact but rather enhance the relationship of the pavilion to the existing courts
The building was designed to blend an old building into a new extension where contrary roof profiles made it a difficult to integrate the old with the new
Distinguishing features of the project
An innovative and comprehensive solution that sits well within a parkland context. The building has a low building mass and respects the parkland and supports a vibrant and active sporting group.
The building design features skillion roofs with large verandas to provide shade and shelter for the users
Barriers overcome to achieve success
Site was bounded by roads, significant trees and playing surfaces. Ground levels made it difficult to achieve appropriate site drainage
Works occurred whilst competition continued from the site. Teams were accommodated in temporary facilities
